Tarek
About Tarek

Tarek was a self taught swimmer. He could swim a few metres of basic front crawl or breast stroke but not without lots of splashing from extraneous movement. He wasn’t comfortable floating on his back. He didn't know how to breathe into the water and was thrilled to discover that his head floated if he allowed it to.

As a surgeon, he valued a methodical approach which encouraged him to think. He enjoyed going about the business of swimming in a soft and gentle way, the same way he needs to go about working intricately on his patients with his hands, he explained.

Every day he discovered a new skill, floating on his front, swimming on his back, rolling from front to back and back to front, coming out of the water to say 'hello'. By the end of the course he'd reached the level we call 'bloke on holiday', someone who can get in the water, look and feel comfortable and enjoy the freedom of movement and fun that swimming brings.

“It has been delightful working with you over the past week. I have learnt a lot during these days. The thing that struck me about both of you is not only your relaxed and confident approach but most importantly the way you work around the individual swimmer to bring out the best."
