I'm a swimmer who suffers with pain whilst swimming.
Many recreational and fitness swimmers strain themselves by swimming with their head held out of the water or by employing instinctive movement patterns which reinforce anxiety about the process of breathing when swimming.
Sue M wanted to swim for fitness but was getting neck and backache after swimming. She described her old breaststroke as "bobbing up and down like a demented cork." All her energy had been going into getting her head out of the water to breathe. After 6 lessons she was able to move forward in her breaststroke by kicking freely and gliding with a free neck. She was able to raise her head, to inhale calmly and without strain, by replacing a strenuous pull with her arms with a gentle sculling motion that gave her more time.
"Dear Cheryl. I don't know if you remember teaching me about 6 years ago but since then I've swum in the Indian Ocean twice, the Caribbean twice and the Med. in France and Greece. You have made such a difference to my holidays. I now swim at least 3 times a week at my local health club in Henley. With many thanks," Fran
