Swimming lessons: case studies

I'm a triathlete who would like to improve my technique.

Many triathletes and fitness swimmers are let down by their front crawl technique. The ‘no pain, no gain’ approach doesn’t work and tends to reinforce bad habits. Swimming with poor technique is stressful, exhausting and the worst possible preparation for a long cycle ride and run.   We help you to improve your front crawl by taking the stress out of your neck, arms and shoulders, and reducing the number of strokes you take per length. Increased efficiency should lead to faster times but our focus is on preventing injury, improving quality of experience and taking the anxiety out of breathing.

Proficient runner and cyclist Carl came last in the swimming leg of the Windsor triathlon. His front crawl breathing was rushed and his arms pulled through the water without any gliding and recovered over the water with too much tension.  In four lessons he reduced the number of strokes per length by half and was able to turn to inhale by balancing on his side so that the in- breath could be unhurried and natural. He aims to complete the 1-mile swim in around 30 minutes next year.

“Well, I did it!!  Was so nervous I was sick, but really enjoyed it once I got started.  I even managed to get 2nd place in the novice female category, and beat a few of the seasoned triathletes from the club!! My swim time was 12.52 but this includes the time for transition 1 as well, where I was quite leisurely in getting my trainers on!!  I was three lengths ahead of the bloke in my lane, which I was chuffed about!  Would just like to say a big Thank You!  I really enjoyed the lessons and feel like I have learnt loads.  Looking forward to practising loads now and getting REALLY good!” Lucy, Haverfordwest
